Thanksgiving 2010

Even though Kevin has 6 siblings, we had a small crowd this year.  4 adults and my children.
Cooking (and cleaning up) a big dinner for the four of us sounded like a lot of work.
So my sweet MIL treated us to a yummy dinner that the Tuscany.

We were lucky enough to be seated in a small nook with a nice round table, adorable leaded glass windows surrounding us and all the privacy we needed.

So many things to be grateful for this year!
These pictures are just a few reminders of some of the things I'm most grateful for.

This little girl LOVES "pink lenalade" (lemonade).

I love how the snow is making their faces glow.

Eating out was such a nice treat.  Thank you Stormy!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Fall Creations

I'm a little behind getting these posted.
It seems like there were so many cute leaf creation ideas out there this year.
I loved this one from Sarah at Clover Lane.

I love the felt leaves from Pottery Barn Kids but didn't like the hefty price of them. $49.
So I made my own.  Using a leaf template I bought from Pebbles in my Pocket.  The best scrapbook store full of ideas, especially for young womens, relief society and primary callings in the church.

I wish I made them a little bigger.

Dana made some cute ones as well.

I was at it again the night before the big day and found myself sewing like the wind, which always makes me feel like the villagers in the 3 Amigos.

I had bought this fabric a year ago and finally got to making skirts for the girls with it.
It's a light weight corduroy.  I couldn't decide what to make with it.  I found darling sweaters at Target and found my inspiration.

Its a 3 tier skirt and fun for twirling.
For the pattern, I used Dana's Market Skirt tutorial and changed the width of each strip to about 4 1/2 inches wide each (except for the top strip, I added 2 inches for the casing).

The girls have loved these skirts.  I made a vow not to make anything for Sadie anymore because she has become so picky and won't wear any of the things I've made her.  But this skirt sure did the trick.  She wore it all day on Thanksgiving with her sweater and headband in tact.

So fun to sew for them.

Pie Party

For Thanksgiving we do the every other year thing.  Since this year was with Kevin's family my mom decided to host a pie party the Sunday before so we could get together for the traditional family Thanksgiving fish pond.
And eat pie.
I've always wanted to try to make a pie.
I made a Coconut Cream pie.

Can you believe I was able to resist the pies?  I had a small bite size taste of each.
Oh, I was missing out!
That pecan crusted Pumpkin Pie (from the Lion House) was delish!

Maybe next year.

I made this fish pond a few years ago (pre-blogging) which has come in handy many times.
It is made out of felt and the water is a glitter blue felt.  Fun!

Ever since I can remember, we'd have a fish pond on Thanksgiving with my cousins.  I loved it so much because I was excited for Christmas to come and receiving a small toy at Thanksgiving reminded me that it was close!

MaryJane is so sad here.  We took away her (real) Barbie fishing pole that she was so determined to bring to Nana's for the fish pond.  She nearly poked everyone in the eye with that thing.
She didn't understand that we weren't going to use that one.

It was fun to have Alexis and Aunt Cathy stop by just in time for the fun.
Each of the kids had to tell us what they are thankful for before receiving their prize.

The girls got some Squinkies and Cole got a Hex bug.

It was great to be with my family on our off year.  A definite repeat!

Corn and Black Bean Quinoa Salad

First off, I want to thank all you kind readers and friends for offering some great advice and support on my last post.  You are the best!!

Things are going much better and I will keep you posted on the outcome.  I'm more emotionally prepared this time. ;)

Since starting my new diet of No sugar, No dairy, No yeast, I have discovered some new and healthy ways to cook and eat.  One of my new favorites was introduced to me from my neighbor friend Kathryn, who is always so kind to share her delicious healthy dishes.

Quinoa
pronounced keen-wah

I felt like I was speaking a different language when I would say Quinoa.
It has been so fascinating to learn about Quinoa.  It is a grain (well not really but it is most grain like) from a plant in South America.  It's high in amino acids, a great source of fiber and complex carbs and packed with protein.

I like to relate it to couscous or "rice balls" as my kids like to call it.  Which we LOVE.  It's soft, fluffy and can be added as a side dish, in place of other grains or mixed together with salads or rice, it seems to have endless possibilities.  You can buy it at most grocery stores.  I bought a big bag from Costco.

Here is my favorite recipe using quinoa.

Corn and Black Bean Quinoa Salad
adapted from epicurious

  • 2 teaspoons grated lime zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar ( I don't add sugar in mine)
  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 1 (14- to 15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can corn, drained
  • 2 medium tomatoes, diced
  • 1 avocado diced
  • 4 scallions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Whisk together lime zest and juice, butter, oil, sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4teaspoon pepper in a large bowl.
Wash quinoa in 3 changes of cold water in a bowl, draining in a sieve each time.
Cook as directed on package.
Add quinoa to dressing and toss until dressing is absorbed, then stir in remaining ingredients and salt and pepper to taste.

This is so yummy!  I make it at the start of the week and it is great for lunch or a side dish to dinner.
I even saw a recipe for a quinoa salad using mango's.
Yum.

Have you ever cooked with quinoa?  What's your favorite recipe?

Nursing Woes and possibly TMI

Back in early August I got Mastitis (a breast infection), which I've had with each baby.  Unfortunately, the antibiotics lead me to a very painful yeast infection, other wise known as Candida, in my milk ducts.  I've had this infection for 15 weeks now and I'm at the end of my rope.

I've tried light therapy, difluccan, grapefruit seed extract, probiotics, Newmans ointment, Gentian Violet (all safe for breastfeeding) and the latest, my diet.
The question I often get is, "How do you stick with it?"  To be honest, the pain hasn't been too bad.  Being on the meds and treatment takes the edge off and it's tolerable.  I've gone through waves of times when I had to bite on a towel while nursing.

I'm not against bottle feeding at all.  I just hate the idea that this choice is being made for me.  I'm so close to just throwing in the towel.  He's almost 6 months old.  The only thing that keeps me hanging on is that every time Frankie nurses it is like a mini physical therapy session on his mouth and jaw; strengthening his muscle tone for speech development.  Also for his immune system, with winter coming and all.  Babies with Down syndrome are prone to ear infections and sinus infections.  My doctor told me, "Frankie will have tubes in his ears."  Like I don't have a choice.
Nursing him through the winter could be beneficial to his health.

Before Halloween I went off sugar and yeast and was starting to feel like I was beating the infection.  I allowed myself to indulge just on Halloween.  Ever since, I've had a huge set back (darn that sugar). Major pain.  Not during nursing but after.  Sharp, shooting, burning fire pain in my breast.

Recently my doctor has been trying to wean me from the diflucan because I've been on it so long.  But on the fourth day without diflucan it came back with full force.

I found myself at Whole Foods yesterday with 3 of my kids desperately looking for more meds (I was out of probiotics and off diflucan).  The pain was unbearable.  And after the Whole Foods employee told me that he couldn't tell me if the particular yeast cleanse was safe for breastfeeding (he said he knew the answer but he just isn't legally allowed to prescribe) I broke down right then and there.  I wasn't asking for a prescription.  I tried to hold back the tears.  But they kept rolling off my checks as each sharp stabbing pain attacked my breast.  The pain took my breath.  I couldn't even speak clearly.

I dashed out of the store with the kids in tow and lost it the second I reached the car.  I speed dialed my APRN and pleaded (sobbed) for any help she might have.  I was not prepared emotionally to stop breast feeding right then and there.  I have found that medical practitioners know very little about how to treat an infection like this.  So disappointing.

We came up with a plan.  Giving me two more weeks of diflucan while frankie is being treated with the same meds so we don't past it back and forth (which I think we have) and stick to my new diet of No sugar (not even fruit),  No yeast,  No diary.  To starve the yeast infection and pretty much starve myself.  Just kidding.  It is a limited diet but my cupboards and fridge are stocked full of the things I can eat.

After my emotional breakdown yesterday,  I'm near ready to quit.  As much as I don't want to, I just don't have any other option.  It just makes me so sad that I can't continue nursing.  I know that this is my last baby and emotionally I'm just not ready to move on yet.  It's a sign of growing up.  Also, how am I going to stop nursing when I have a full feeding schedule and milk supply?  So discouraging.

The bright side now is I have two more weeks to give it one last go.  Hopefully within that time I can prepare myself to let it go or by some miracle, get rid of it.

But all I really want to do is enjoy these moments with my sweet little boy.  He's calm, snugly, sweet, warm and adorable in every possible way.   Can't time just stand still?

Playdate

A few weeks ago Frankie and I were invited to a playdate with other kids with Down syndrome.  My first venture into the world of Down syndrome.

It was SO nice to meet other moms in my same situation.

It felt like I was in an automatic club.

All these adorable little faces just melted my heart!  It felt like one big family.
Thank you Kieca for the invite!  Your Bree is adorable and it was SO fun to meet everyone!

The Best Game Ever!

Family room pick up.
At the end of the day after the house has become unraveled, we play this little game and the room is picked up in minutes.

The kids love it too.   Sometimes its hard to get Cole motivated to help out.  He is competitive so this game works perfectly for him.

Before we start, we all guess how long it will take for us to finish. 8 minutes, 5 minutes etc... The winner gets a prize ( a small handful of chocolate chips, a 5 min. back rub or what ever I can think of on a whim)

I start my stopwatch on my phone and we all begin singing the  March of the Swiss Soldiers.
It is so fun to see the room come together in under 10 minutes.  Even MaryJane gets in on it too.  She asks me "Where does this go?", with each item and puts it away where I tell her to.

My only rule, put things away where it goes (not thrown into another room) or you'll be disqualified.

Do you do this with your kids?  It sure is a fun way to get things done.

A cute big sister

Sadie has been so adorable interacting with Frankie lately.  She is just so sweet.
She talks to him so cute.  Here she is telling him all about her silly bands

Its so fun to watch her dote on him in such a motherly way.

I haven't explained to the kids yet that Frankie has Down Syndrome.  I'm not afraid of telling them, I'm just waiting for the right time and opportunity.  It could be tomorrow, it could be in a year.  I just have faith that it will happen when it is supposed to.

Sometimes I feel that Sadie already gets that Frankie is special.  No words needed.  She loves and adores him and she so good at showing it.  Who knew that my little independent Sadie who didn't care to snuggle much as a baby turned out to be so nurturing.

My heart is so full today!  I love my little munchkins.  I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to be their mother.

I mean look at this adorable profile...
I'm so darn attached to this little boy.  He fills my soul with so much joy!

Can you believe he is 5 months old already?  Still as cuddly as ever!
Love, love, LOVE him!

Here's a little video Sadie took of herself.  My favorite part is at 52 seconds.
"Just doin' a little chill"

Halloween 2010

Sadly this years Halloween was so rainy.
We quickly snapped a few pictures as the clouds were rolling in.

It poured as we began.  But thankfully it calmed down and allowed the kids to cash in on some serious candy.

After pictures, we bundled up in coats and went on our way with our umbrellas.

Mermaid, Barbie and Harry Potter
Every year the kids love to organize and count their candy.
Sadie is one silly girl when it comes to candy.  The pile on the right is her dislike pile.
She's often not in the mood to even eat the candy in her like pile.

The most candy Cole has ever collected.  The Kit Kat's won with a total of 22.  Cole was out for 2 1/2 hours.  He really got into it this year.

MaryJane doing what she does best and copies her siblings for a picture with the candy.

All that candy.  Whoa.  I get sick looking at it all.  After eating my fair share on Halloween night, I've tried so hard to resist it.  Despite my efforts of keeping the candy out of sight or limited to a few a day, everywhere I turn in my house I seem to be faced with candy.  I couldn't take it any longer.  So I let Cole pick out 10 of his favorites and bought all the rest of his candy for $5.00 and got rid of it.  The best money I've spent this month!  The girls, don't even ask for it.

I Love you Halloween,  I just don't like all the candy you leave behind.  I like it all too much.
